AMERICAN OFFICER WITH A CONSCIENCE

Lt. Richard R. Steinke, 27, a U.S.Army Special Forces officer who graduated from West Point in i962, was courtmartialed and dismissed from the service June 26 for refusing a duty assignment in Vietnam on moral grounds. According to his superior, he said, β€œThe . Vietnamese war is not worth a single life." He could have been given five years in prison. Placard-carrying pickets staged a sympathy demonstration for him in front of the main post office in his home town of Milwaukee.
