"Capture" of Montes -- A Case of Mistaken Identity

World Outlook Vol. 4, No. 39, 9 December 1966 · p 14 · 85 words

MISTAKEN IDENTITY ~

Guatemalan government forces told the press November 40 that they had captured Cesar Montes, the leader of the Fuerzas Armadas Rebeldes, the previous day. Montes succeeded the well-known Luis Turcios as leader of the guerrilla group when the latter was killed in an automobile accident recently. On December 2, however, the Guatemalan government admitted that the man they had captured was not Cesar Montes. They claimed, by way of excuse, that he bore a "remarkable resemblance" to the head of the FAR.
