SPRING

Hubert Humphrey, in Paris April 7, "was greeted by chanting demonstrators who hurled eggs, paint and angry slogans," the New York Times reported. "A huge police force imposed rough control on the demonstrators...who chanted 'U.S. assassin!' and ‘Peace in Vietnam!'" Automobiles in the cortége that sped the embarrassing guest through the streets were splattered with eggs and paint. A U.S. flag was torn from a building and burned and windows at the American Express were smashed. More than 160 arrests were made and 46 policemen were injured.
